New Orleans is Louisiana’s largest city and one of the target destinations for tourists, it is famous for Dixieland jazz and its characteristic French Quarter, here one may also visit many art galleries and museums. Baton Rouge boasts a magnificent Capitol Building, with a dome of limestone and a viewing platform to view the over 11 hectares of beautiful gardens.
Other sites of interest include Lafayette with its superb gardens; from here one may take the Azalea Trail into the Atchafalaya Basin, the largest and most remote swamp in the USA. The Mississippi Valley is mostly marshland with several protected areas such as the Global Wildlife Center where visitors can enjoy horseback riding among the exotic animals that roam the 364-hectare (900-acre) park. In Avery one may marvel at the enormous salt domes or continue to Alexandria and explore the many forests and parks.
Houma is a typical bayou town encircled by swampland, where many tours are available to spot the alligators, wading birds and plenty of other swamp wildlife.
The climate in Louisiana is subtropical with a high level of humidity. Winters are mild as are autumn and spring.
