Hungary – short description:

Hungary is situated in Central Europe with its borders touching those of the Slovak Republic, Ukraine, Romania, Croatia, Austria, Slovenia and Serbia. With Budapest as its capital Hungary is one of the smallest countries in Europe, the population speaking Hungarian as well as English, German and some French.

The country’s landscape is composed of the Great Plain, which stretches from the Danube to the Carpathian Mountains, the mountains of Transylvania and those of the Fruska Gora. Lake Balaton is one of the largest in Central Europe.

Hungary’s cultural heritage is rich and full of past conflicts due to the constant invasions it has had to stand up to, from the Mongols in the 13th century right up to the communist domination in the mid 20th century. Budapest is a magnificent city, divided into two parts by the Danube, with splendid historical buildings as well as trendy bars and clubs, where writers, musicians and artists take refuge.

The Puszta Prairie is a wide expanse, which seems everlasting, with beautiful scenery and endless skies. The national parks and hundreds of protected sites offer wonderful areas in which to trek and admire the natural landscape and its views. The thermal spas are a great place to relax in and the acres and acres of orchards and vineyards are a spectacle of the land’s cultural traditions.

Summers are very warm from June to August, while spring and autumn are mild. Winters are very cold with snow and frequent rain throughout the year.
