Kenya – short description:

Kenya is considered by many as the ‘Jewel of East Africa’ it boasts some of the best beaches with magnificent coral reefs and pristine white sand. Kenya is also synonymous of wildlife, forestland and mountains.

The country is bordered by Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania and Somalia and it overlooks the Indian Ocean. Nairobi, the capital is situated in the highlands, which are scattered with lakes and national parks. The official language is English and Kiswahili is the national language, as well as over 40 ethnic languages.

One-tenth of Kenya is designated as national park area and reserves boasting every possible wildlife specimen. There are over 50 national parks in the different savannah and forest areas, as well as six marine parks in the Indian Ocean.

The landscape varies from savannah landscapes of acacias where the parks of Masai Mara, Amboseli, Samburu and Tsavo are located, to the lush highlands of coffee and tea plantations.

Kenya is also rich in a diverse population, with about 40 different tribes, each with their own languages, the major ones being the Kikuyu, the Luyia and the Luo and of course the renowned Masai, who stand tall and proud leading a semi-nomadic lifestyle as cattle herders.

The coastal areas are tropical, but tempered by monsoon winds. The lowlands are hot but mainly dry, while the highlands are more temperate with four seasons. Nairobi has a very pleasant climate throughout the year due to its altitude. Near Lake Victoria, the temperatures are much higher and rainfall can be heavy.

The people from Kenya are called Kenyan.
