Ethiopia – short description:

Ethiopia is situated in Northeast Africa bordered by Sudan, Kenya, Eritrea, Somalia and Djibouti, offering some of the highest and fascinating sites in Africa.

Its capital Addis Ababa is at an altitude of 2,440 m above sea level situated in the central highlands, it boasts magnificent view points and landscapes all around as well as majestic palaces to visit, notably the Menelik Palace and the Jubilee Palace St. Georges Cathedral. The official language is Amharic, although there are around 80 different native dialects spoken throughout Ethiopia as well as English and Arabic.

The landscape is strikingly dramatic for it goes from the Jagged Simien Mountains, amongst the highest in the country, to the Danakil Depression, lowland of sulphur fumaroles offering a lunar landscape. The Blue Nile Falls is also spectacular site to visit near Bahar Dar.

Ethiopia has eight UNESCO World Heritage sites, due to its rich cultural past. It is a country with many mystical churches carved in rock and ancient capitals, such as the Lalibela, probably the largest monolithic church in the world, Aksum the ancient royal capital of the early Ethiopian kingdom and Gondar a site featuring many ruined castles.

The climate is nearly always comfortably with the rainy season going from June to September, generally temperatures never rise over 30°C except for certain lowland regions.

The people from Ethiopia are called Ethiopians.
