The state of Kentucky – short description:

Kentucky lies in the east of the USA with landscapes of mountain hollows and stretches of horse farms. Kentucky is renowned for its bourbon distilleries, moonshine stills, fried chicken and Kentucky Derby.

The town of Lexington is a famous breeding center for all the surrounding farms and visitors are welcome to the Kentucky Horse Park to look around the center and are offered free tours.

Frankfort is the capital of Kentucky, although Louisville is better known due to its past American Revolution history. Here one may visit various historical sites and amble through the quaint streets of the Old Louisville. Hodgenville is also of historical importance, for it is the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln, where one can visit the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site, with its 56 steps, each representing a year in his lifetime.

Harrodsburg is the oldest permanent English settlement west of the Alleghenies, with the old Fort Harrod State park with the replica of parts of the 1774 fort.

Kentucky also boasts hundreds of streams and lakes, underground caves and mining towns in the Appalachian Mountains. Reelfoot Lake is another interesting site, for this lake was formed when the Mississippi flowed backwards during the Madrid Fault earthquake in 1812.

Kentucky’s climate is mild with a lot of rainfall and snow in the winter. Springtime and autumn are usually the wettest months.
